7 most beautiful waterfalls in the Leningrad region and Karelia

Despite the fact that St. Petersburg is located on a plain, there are rivers, rapids, and waterfalls.
We have selected the most beautiful raging streams in the region and in South Karelia, which are definitely worth visiting on a fine day.

Gorchakovshchinsky

Three-meter waterfall flowing through solid clay banks.

Against the background of the Caucasian and Siberian ones, it looks tiny. But this is generally a rare occurrence for these parts. The Gorchakovshchinsky waterfall is also famous for the fact that next to it there is the famous unique earthen Lyuboshan fortress. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to get to its territory - excavations are constantly being carried out there. — Leningrad region, Volkhov district, village of Staraya Ladoga

Sablinsky

Sablinsky caves are a famous and grandiose natural monument.

There are also famous waterfalls there. The first and largest is Sablinsky. The water level in it ranges from 2 to 3 meters. A stormy stream of water rushes between low brown rocks. Beauty. — Sablinskie caves, Tosnensky district

Tosnensky

Waterfall, located on the Tosna River, is considered by many to be a kind of copy of Niagara.

Indeed, there is something in common between them: a wide stream rushes through forests and fields, and then falls from a 2-3-meter height. It is worth noting that during spring floods the valley is completely filled with water, and a small threshold remains from the waterfall. — Sablinsky caves, Tosnensky district

Kivach

The third largest flat waterfall in Europe (after Janiskengas and Rhine).

The total height of the descent is 11 meters. One of the main tourist attractions in Karelia. Gavrila Derzhavin, who was once the local governor, said that the sight of Kivach evokes pleasant horror. The name comes from the Finnish kiivas, which means “stormy”, “swift”. If you believe the legend, the waterfall appeared when one river, not wanting to lose another, rushed after it and broke through the rocks. So it turned out to be such a noisy, seething stream. — Karelia, Kondopoga district

Yukankoski, or White Bridges

This waterfall reaches a height of 20 meters.

Its name appeared when the Finns decided to build white bridges directly over the rushing stream. There is nothing left of the crossings themselves now, except perhaps only a couple of fragments. People usually go here by jeeps and ATVs: the roads here are not in the best condition. In summer you can swim under this stream, as if in the shower. — Karelia, Pitkyaranta district

Lyaskelsky

If not the highest and most spectacular, then certainly the noisiest waterfall in Karelia.

It is located in the village of Lyaskelya, which is why it got its name. The seething stream is not the creation of Mother Nature, but an engineering design. The story is like this.

In 1899, a pulp mill opened in the area. To avoid problems with electricity, a hydroelectric power station was built on the Yanis River. Therefore, the waterfall rises ten meters under a bridge spanning the river. — Karelia, Pitkyaranta district, village.

Lyaskelya Waterfall on the Karasta River

If it’s a long way to go to Karelia, but you really want to look at waterfalls, then you can take a trip towards Oranienbaum.

Here you can walk among architectural masterpieces, and watch the waterfall in the Upper Park on the Karasta River. Of course, the local source is not the Karelian communities, but it is also quite remarkable. Seething streams of water roll down massive artificial granite steps. The pressure for the current was created artificially, using two ponds. The reddish tint of the waters is especially impressive: the Karasta River originates in forest swamps, which is why the water is saturated with peat particles. — Lomonosov, Petrodvortsovy district.
