A sakura alley with an area of 2.5 square kilometers has opened in the Peter the Great Botanical Garden in St. Petersburg.

Sakura are planted in the form of an alley in the central part of the Botanical Garden.

The project began last year, when the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden ordered trees of the most beautiful and frost-resistant varieties Kanzan, Beni-Yutaka and Kushiro-Yae. Seedlings of cold-resistant sakura species were grown specifically for St. Petersburg on the territory of the Kagetsu Noen horticultural plantation.

These varieties are distinguished by unusual colors of rich pink and red shades. They bloom even before the leaves appear. Sakura Botanical Garden Last May, some of the trees were planted in open ground, and some were left in closed areas of the Botanical Garden.

“This was done so as not to put the entire batch of seedlings at risk; they had to adapt to the St. Petersburg climate, which nevertheless turned out to be more severe. About half of the seedlings took root, but this can be considered a good indicator. We were able to create a full-fledged area of Japanese sakura. St. Petersburg residents will now be able to admire them every year at the end of April - beginning of May,” says Deputy Head of the Botanical Garden Yuri Kalugin. Now all the trees are planted in the ground. The opening of the sakura alley will coincide with the start of work in the Botanical Garden of the Japanese corner and house for tea ceremonies, which this spring will begin to operate year-round and introduce the citizens and guests of St. Petersburg to the tradition of Japanese tea art, regardless of the time of year.
