The construction of the palace began in 1717, and today the palace is considered to be a masterpiece in the Russian Baroque style.
The construction stages were complex; a considerable number of architects were involved in the construction, the first of whom was Braunstein. A new stage in the construction of the palace was the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna. In 1748, the work was headed by the first architect of Tsarskoye Selo, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. However, the wars caused terrible destruction, and the rooms were destroyed. In 1812, the architect Stasov recreated the front office, rooms reminiscent of victory during the war, as well as the front staircase, made in the “second Rococo” style.
Since then, in the Catherine Palace-Museum, the exhibition rooms are: the white formal dining room, the Green Dining Room, the crimson and green Pillar Room, the Throne and Picture Rooms, the Amber Room, as well as the Bedchamber and Waiter's Room. The decoration of the Palace is mesmerizing.
Cartouches, mascarons, atlantes and caryatids are used as decorations, and the magnificent image is complemented by the capitals of the columns. The central pediment is decorated with a cartouche in the shape of an “E” and Catherine’s crown. As for the interior decoration, we can highlight the painting room, the walls of which are hung with paintings by European artists. The recently restored amber room is no less popular. An integral part of the palace is the park, the territory of which is well-groomed and decorated with flower beds and sculptures. The Hermitage, the Upper and Lower Baths and the Grotto deserve special attention, comfortably located in a landscape park. Thanks to the work of restorers and historians, out of a total of 58 rooms that were destroyed during the Second World War, 32 were restored. From the post-war times of the October Revolution to the present day, Catherine's Palace operates as a Museum, which regularly conducts individual excursions and excursions for tourists groups.
