Elagin Palace
Located in the eastern highest part of the island, it attracts attention from afar.
Unlike other palaces of that time, the Elaginoostrovsky Palace was a summer residence, designed for seasonal stay of guests. It was conceived as a resting place for the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, an alternative to Pavlovsk. These features were reflected in the layout and decorative design of the interiors. Until 1917, the palace belonged to the imperial family.
After the revolution of 1917, the palace came under the jurisdiction of the Petrograd Council of People's Commissars. From 1918 to 1929, the Elaginoostrovsky Palace became the Museum of History and Life. His collection is not only preserved, but also replenished with items from disbanded dachas on Kamenny and Krestovsky Islands. In 1930, the palace was closed, the collection was scattered, some works were transferred to the funds of the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Gatchina Palace, others were sold through domestic and foreign trade organizations. For some time after its disbandment, a branch of the Institute of Plant Growing of the Academy of Sciences was located in the building of the Elaginoostrovsky Palace. During the Great Patriotic War, the palace was badly damaged: as a result of a fire in early 1942, the interiors were destroyed, the roof and interfloor ceilings collapsed.
After the war, given the enormous artistic value of the Russian ensemble, restoration work began. At first it was planned to rebuild the palace into a building for dances and games of the Central Park of Culture and Leisure. After studying and systematizing historical materials, it was decided to restore the historical appearance of the palace and the state rooms of the first floor. From 1952 to 1960, restoration work continued. In 1961, the restored palace received its first visitors as a one-day recreation center for workers with exhibition halls on the first floor, recreation rooms and billiard rooms on the second and a dance hall in the church building on the third.
Only in 1987, the status of a museum was returned to the palace, and a lot of work began to return lost items and create a palace collection. Currently, on the ground floor of the palace in the State Halls, artistic interiors in the Empire style are presented. Visitors can get acquainted with works of painting, sculpture, decorative and applied art of the first third of the 19th century from the collections of the Elaginoostrovsky Palace Museum. On the second floor there is an exhibition of Russian residential interiors from the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries.
