The first Hermitage in Russia appeared in Peterhof: it was built by order of Peter I in the Lower Park in 1721-1725. The first art gallery in Russia appeared in the Monplaisir Palace: the collection of paintings by Peter I included works by Dutch, Flemish, Italian and German artists of the 17th-18th centuries. The Neptune Fountain is 50 years older than Peterhof (it was created in 1650 - 1660)

Peterhof, which was the ceremonial summer residence of emperors for 200 years, is inextricably linked with our history.
The Primorsky Paradise was built as a grandiose triumphal monument glorifying the greatness of Russia, which during the Northern War won the much-needed and desired access to the Baltic Sea. The first documentary mention of Peterhof dates back to 1705, when it was called “Piterhof” - “Peter’s Court” in the Dutch manner.
Construction of the residence, which is not inferior in beauty and luxury to the best residences of European monarchs, including the French Versailles, began in 1714. The project can rightfully be called the brainchild of Peter I himself - more than ten of his hand-written drawings relating to Peterhof, and an even larger number of drawings with corrections and notes, have been preserved.
Even after the death of the emperor, transforming the summer residence for a century and a half, the architects not only carefully preserved, but also continued to implement all the main plans of the king - the reformer.
Already in August 1723, the grand opening of Peterhof took place, and by this time the Lower Park had been laid out, the Sea Canal had been dug, some of the fountains were in operation, the upper chambers had been decorated, and the Monplaisir and Marly palaces had been built.
After the October Revolution of 1917, Peterhof became a major educational center.
During the Great Patriotic War, the German occupiers barbarously destroyed the palaces and the park. Restoration began from the very first days after liberation, and today this natural and man-made masterpiece welcomes its guests, delighting and surprising them as before. In 1990, the architectural and park ensemble "Peterhof" was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, and in 2008 it was recognized as one of the 7 wonders of Russia.
