Ioannovsky Monastery

St. John's Monastery is a place of pilgrimage for many believers.
Here, in the temple tomb, rest the relics of the holy righteous John of Kronstadt.

The monastery is located between the bank of the Karpovka River and Professor Popov Street. Ioannovsky Stavropegic Convent of St. Petersburg was founded in 1900 by the holy righteous John of Kronstadt.

The monastery was named in honor of St. John of Rylsky, the patron saint of the holy father. The monastery itself was conceived as a courtyard to the St. John the Theologian convent in the village of Sura, Arkhangelsk region. The site for the monastery was donated by the honorary citizen of St. Petersburg Simeon Ramensky, allocating part of his land on the bank of Karpovka for construction.

The design of the monastery in the Byzantine spirit was created in 1900 by the architect Nikolai Nikonov. Construction progressed quickly and already in 1901 the temple was consecrated. The first two floors of the five-domed and majestic building were occupied by living quarters: the sisters' cells, the library, the prosphyra room and the refectory. After the death of John in 1908, miracles began to happen in the monastery: people, coming to say goodbye to the abbot in the white marble tomb in the basement, found not only peace and answers to their questions, but also healing: a rumor began to spread persistently throughout the city that everyone whoever comes to the tomb will find recovery here for himself or his family.

The monastery was opened until 1923.

Then his property was partly taken away and partly plundered. The nuns were sent to camps. The entrance to the tomb of John of Kronstadt was walled up, and the tomb was concreted, but believers still came to the shrine, placing candles at the outer wall of the monastery. The building housed various organizations: sewing workshops, apartments, a dormitory and an educational institution. Restoration of the temple began in 1989.

Today, a small museum has been opened in the temple-tomb of John of Kronstadt, and a free Sunday school operates at the monastery. In 1991, the monastery received stauropegial status, that is, subordinate directly to the patriarch. Now services are held here daily. Address: emb.
