The building where the Rodina Cinema Center is now located was built in 1914-1915 on Manezhnaya Square according to the design of graduates of the Imperial Academy of Arts, architects K. S. Pokrovsky and B. Ya. Botkin, and was originally conceived as a place for the Petrograd Provincial Credit society, which occupied the upper floors until 1918.

The facades and interiors were made according to the sketches of the famous sculptor and model maker A.G. Gromov.

At the top of the building there were banking offices and a large hall for securities transactions, the mezzanine was reserved for “living photography”, and the basement rooms were occupied by commercial stores. The memory of the previous owners is still preserved by the statues of two griffins under the roof. In 1917, the cinema “Splendid Palace” (translated from English as “Brilliant Palace”) opened here, so named for the splendor of its decoration, which became the best cinema hall in St. Petersburg.

In 1918, the cinema hosted the premiere of the first Soviet feature film, “Compaction,” filmed according to the script by People’s Commissar of Education A.V. Lunacharsky.

In the foyer there is a commemorative marble plaque dedicated to this premiere. Since 1924, as a sign of solidarity with the German working class, the cinema received the name “Rot-Front” and bore it until the end of World War II.

In 1930, the cinema hosted the premiere of the first Soviet sound film, “A Start to Life.”

Before this event, the visuals of the films were accompanied by the performance of a tapper. A conservatory student, young D.D., worked here as a pianist. Shostakovich. From 1929 to 1934

Several theaters operated in the small hall of the cinema: “Curved Mirror”, “Theater of Small Forms”, as well as the theater group “Comedy” under the direction of director Ya.B. Frid. In 1937, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the Rot-Front cinema received the status of the country's first Children's cinema.

In 1942, during the blockade, a Christmas tree was installed in the cinema for children from orphanages, and New Year's matinees were held.

And at the end of 1945, after the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the cinema received a new name - “Motherland”. Today, the City Children's Cinema Center "Rodina" is actively involved in film education, holds film festivals, and shows original non-profit, festival, non-fiction, and animated films.

The film center was awarded the “Gold Medal” of Lenfilm and the St. Petersburg Federation of Film Press “For many years of educational activities through the means of cinema,” and also received numerous gratitude from children’s, public and charitable organizations. In terms of the variety and level of films presented, “Motherland” has no competitors.

Here they show not only children's films and cartoons of Soviet and Russian cinema, but also serious domestic and foreign films. The building has large and small halls. The cinema center's equipment allows showing film and modern cinema in 2- and 3D formats. In 2009, by decision of the City Public Council, the Rodina Cinema Center was included in the “List of real estate objects located on the territory of St. Petersburg, the purpose of which is valuable for residents of St. Petersburg and is recommended for preservation.” Thus, the public recognized the uniqueness of the cinema center and its historical significance.
