Chinese Palace

The palace got its name for its luxurious interior decoration.
Address: ave. Dvortsovy, 48, Lomonosov
“The Chinese palace is a one-of-a-kind pearl, a work of art so complete, so harmonious, so amazingly executed - such a graceful, elegant trinket that, looking at it, one cannot help but admire it...” wrote the famous art historian A. Benoit.

The Chinese Palace is located in the southwestern part of the Oranienbaum palace and park ensemble (Lomonosov).

It was built in 1762-1768. for Empress Catherine II, designed by the architect Antonio Rinaldi. The palace is part of the ensemble of the Own Dacha in Oranienbaum. And it got its name due to the fact that in the middle of the 18th century, the fashion for “Chinese” dominated in architecture, and a number of rooms in the palace were decorated using authentic examples of Chinese and Japanese art. In 1852-1853.

According to the designs of A. Stackenschneider and L. Bonstedt, the second floor was built. The palace was opened as a museum in 1922. It was here (of all the buildings of Oranienbaum in the mid-18th century) that the Rococo style most fully manifested itself. Another unique feature of the palace is that most of its rooms have retained the absolute authenticity of the decoration. The fact is that during the Great Patriotic War, Oranienbaum was not captured by the Nazis, which cannot be said about the rest of the suburbs of St. Petersburg. While the exterior of the Chinese Palace has undergone changes, its interior decoration has remained unchanged since the 1760s. In 1946, after minor restoration work, the palace reopened as a museum.

Of course, this meant a lot for the post-war suburbs of Leningrad - after all, the rest of the palaces at that time lay in ruins. The interiors of the palace delight and amaze with luxury: decorative paintings adorning the walls, floors made of precious wood, gilded stucco, marble, bas-reliefs, wall paintings... There was also a minus: the building constantly suffered from dampness.

This was the reason for numerous restoration works in the palace. The most famous chamber of the Chinese Palace is the Glass Bead Cabinet.

The walls of the room are decorated with twelve glass bead painting panels. Address: ave. Dvortsovy, 48, Lomonosov.
