The first stone for the foundation of the Prince Vladimir Cathedral was laid back in 1741. Then the construction of the temple according to the design of the architect M. G. Zemtsov was managed by P. Trezzini, but after a few years the work had to be suspended. Initially, the church was intended to be single-domed, but according to a decree of 1945, it had to be designed again as five-domed, according to ancient Russian custom.
Address:
st. Blokhina, 26
Construction of the cathedral continued in 1766, but according to the drawings and calculations of the architect A. Rinaldi.
The fire that happened in 1772 again interrupted construction for several years. Work continued only in 1782. Now the architect I.E. has taken over the leadership. Stasov. The altar was consecrated only in 1789. In the appearance and interior decoration of the temple one observes a synthesis of baroque and classicist motifs.
However, despite this, the image of the structure is perceived by the viewer as a single structure in its artistic style. The shape of the side domes of the cathedral is organically combined with the volume of the central one in such a way that they represent a whole composition. An elegant bell tower, reaching a height of 57 meters, is fused with this group. At the top it is tetrahedral, and its lower part is cylindrical. The nobility and majesty of the image of the Prince Vladimir Cathedral put it on the list of the best churches of the northern capital in the second half of the 18th century. The space inside the temple, which is rectangular in shape, is divided into three naves by rows of columns.
The walls and the central drum are decorated with pilasters. There are no frescoes on the vaults and dome, with the exception of four images of the Evangelists located on the sails of the cathedral. It is possible that these frescoes were painted by the famous painter Karl Bryullov. The wooden iconostasis is made in the Empire style.
On the wall of the altar apse there is a grandiose fresco “Holy Eucharist”, which is a copy of the composition by V.M. Vasnetsov, which is located in the Vladimir Cathedral. The stained glass window of the Savior, which was made in 1910, is also located here. The western wall of the temple is decorated with copies of paintings by Raphael and Paolo Veronese, made on biblical subjects. During Soviet times, the temple first fell into the hands of the Renovationists, then the Living Church group, and eventually it was transferred to the community of the Patriarchal Church. It is interesting that the Prince Vladimir Cathedral was closed to believers only in the period from 1926 to 1927. From 1941 to 1991, the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, which was transferred from the closed Kazan Cathedral, was presented in this space.
