The “House of Composers” began to function the following year, 1933 (at 4 Zodchego Rossi Street).
For more than seven decades, the Union of Composers of Leningrad–St. Petersburg has been headed by outstanding masters, whose names are widely known both in our country and far beyond its borders. In the 1930s and 40s it was Vladimir Shcherbachev, Isaac Dunaevsky, Mikhail Chulaki, Dmitry Shostakovich. From 1948 to 1964 - Vasily Solovyov-Sedoy, from 1964 to 2006 - Andrei Petrov. From 2006 to the present, the chairman of the Union is Grigory Korchmar. Since 1948, the Union of Composers of Leningrad - St. Petersburg has been located in the historical mansion of Princess Gagarina - the creation of Auguste Montferrand, located on Bolshaya Morskaya, 45, and now called the "House of Composers of St. Petersburg." The Union of Composers of St. Petersburg is the second largest composer organization in Russia after Moscow, currently uniting more than two hundred leading composers and musicologists of our city.
The internal structure of the Union is free from any formalism and is based on the Charter approved by the relevant government authorities. The current work is managed by the Board of 25 people, within which the Presidium operates. It includes the Chairman of the Union - G.O. Korchmar, heads of the largest creative sections and associations - A.G. Popov, I.G. Raiskin, V.A. Sapozhnikov, and also V.D. Bibergan is the Chairman of the Admissions Committee, which is in charge of replenishing the ranks of members of the St. Petersburg Union of Composers. The scope of competence of the Board is very wide and varied: it approves long-term and current plans for the organization’s activities, admits composers and musicologists to membership in the Union, nominates members of the organization for state prizes, titles, awards and other distinctions, as well as scholarships and social benefits, accepts reports heads of union structural divisions, etc. Control over the activities of the governing bodies of the Union of Composers is carried out by an Audit Commission of five people headed by the Chairman - V.A. Gurevich. The creative life of the organization is based on a number of associations.
Among them are traditional sections (symphonic, choral and chamber music, criticism and musicology, folklore, children's, popular, light music), as well as innovations of the last fifteen years - the Sound Paths Association, Contemporary Music (ACM), Russian Tradition, composer's circle "Melos", multimedia section. These associations do not have permanent members; they unite musicians “by interests”, in accordance with the stylistic, genre or other aspirations of a particular author. Such freedom of artistic views allows us to actually, and not declaratively, ensure the democracy of the internal life of the Composers' Union, and smooth out naturally arising creative contradictions. It is no coincidence that the Union of Composers of St. Petersburg turned out to be one of the few creative associations of the city that avoided a split in the early 1990s and completely preserved the property that belonged to it. And this property is quite significant.
This includes the House of Music on Staropetergofsky, 44 and the Repino House of Creativity. All composers and musicologists of our organization simultaneously belong to the Musical Foundation of St. Petersburg, which through its activities helps improve the conditions of the creative and social life of its members. The House of Composers (director – S.I. Zasosova) has economic independence, providing material and organizational support for the statutory activities of the Union of Composers.
Effective use of property allows the Union, which in the new social and legal conditions does not have state funding, not only not to reduce the volume of creative work, but still to hold regular chamber music evenings, creative meetings, meetings of the Board and creative associations, conferences, and studies in the House of Composers as part of a seminar for amateur composers. At the same time, in recent years, the leadership of the Union has been forced to deal with complex issues of property relations arising from the non-state nature of our organization. The creative and organizational activities of the Union are coordinated by the secretary-referent of the Board T.V.
Shmakova and head of the concert and information department T.A. Khaynovskaya. The SK library (headed by N.M. Tomashevich) has a unique collection of books and music. In the structure of the House of Composers there is a recording room (headed by S.G. Ryltsev), which records all the main Union concerts, and an electronic music studio (headed by S.S. Vazhov), in which new works by St. Petersburg composers are recorded, and which has a huge archive of sound recordings works by members of the organization over many decades of its existence. A similar studio - M-Records - is located in the premises of the House of Music (director - S.K. Muravyov, artistic director - A.V. Andersen). Sheet music materials covering seven decades of the St. Petersburg school of composition of the 20th-21st centuries are also stored there (the head of the department is M.V. Sharapova), and a department for the reproduction of handwritten and printed materials is located. New opuses are now typed, edited and corrected in the Computer Music Typing Studio (headed by E.V. Maresh). The most significant activity of the Union of Composers is the organization and holding of large creative events, mainly dedicated to modern St. Petersburg music.
These are the annual international festivals “St. Petersburg Musical Spring”, “Land of Children”, “Sound Paths”. “St. Petersburg Musical Spring” is one of the oldest and most respected festivals in the music world. It is a major cultural forum that demonstrates the searches and achievements of contemporary composers of our city in the field of symphonic, choral, vocal and instrumental chamber music and generally highlights the role and the place of St. Petersburg in modern musical society.
The festival is characterized by a wide genre and stylistic range, a large number of world premieres, an outstanding performing line-up and the presence of magnificent concert venues. One of the most important areas of the Union’s activities – the musical and aesthetic education of the younger generation – corresponds to the international music festival “Land of Children”.
The diverse and bright world of childhood is embodied both in concert programs and in children’s and youth competitions held within the festival framework: the international competition “I am a composer” named after. V.A. Gavrilin and the international competition of piano duets “Brother and Sister” named after. L.A. Brooke. Finally, the international festival of new music “Sound Paths” is dedicated to avant-garde trends in the field of contemporary musical art, which is both a kind of creative laboratory and a demonstration of the latest positive achievements in this field.
In addition, the Union of Composers takes an active part in organizing and conducting various composition competitions and implementing creative projects.
Next year, the Union of Composers of St. Petersburg is expecting a triple anniversary: the 80th anniversary of the organization, the 50th anniversary of the “St. Petersburg Musical Spring” and the 25th anniversary of the “Land of Children”.
Despite the difficulties of today's realities, the Union will try to meet these dates with dignity, honoring its long and glorious traditions and delighting listeners with new creative achievements. Of course, a compressed listing is not capable of reflecting the actual sounding music. In order to hear it, come to our House and be welcome guests of our festivals.
