Children's graduations at the Leningrad Zoo:

If you are looking for an original way to celebrate the graduation of elementary school students, and at the same time introduce children to the diversity of wildlife, then the Leningrad Zoo is in a hurry to offer you a unique program “Graduation at the Leningrad Zoo”

Little graduates will enjoy an interesting search game around the zoo, which is held in the form of a friendly competition between two teams. Children look for and solve riddles about animals, making a real trip around the world together with the presenters! During the game, both teams will be fed with two zoo animals to choose from: bear, macaques, lion, jaguar, puma, alpaca. Feeding of the animals takes place under the supervision of zoo specialists; each team member takes part in feeding.

Also, the participants of our exciting journey will enjoy horseback riding and ponies on the “Riding Circle”. And at the end, the contact animal department, which is closed to ordinary visitors, will open its doors for them! This section houses the zoo's tame pets - rabbits, owls, ferrets, snakes, porcupines and many others, with whom children will be able to get to know each other better, pet them and take a souvenir photo.

STORY:

The zoo in St. Petersburg was founded on August 1 (old style, August 14 - new style) 1865. Initially it was a private menagerie. It was opened and maintained at their own expense by a Dutchman of Prussian citizenship, Julius Gebhardt and his wife Sophia. Subsequently, it changed many owners, remaining a private institution for more than 50 years.

The zoo came into state ownership only in 1917, when after the revolution the “Decree on the nationalization of private entertainment enterprises” was issued. In 1918-1941, after the nationalization of the zoo, an Academic Council was created to manage it, which included prominent scientists of that time. During these years, a scientific library was created, research work began at the zoo, and scientific expeditions began. During this period, the Circle of Young Zoologists (CYZ) was founded, which operates at the Leningrad Zoo to this day.

Together with the city, the Leningrad Zoo survived the most terrible page of its history - the Great Patriotic War and the blockade. Many zoo employees went to the front, and a significant part of the animals were evacuated to Kazan. But many animals and employees remained in the city. Zoo workers continued to keep the animals and show them to visitors.

In its history, the zoo was closed to citizens only once - in the terrible winter of 1941-42, but in the spring of 1942 it was opened. About two dozen people who saved animals during the war, many of whom lived right in the zoo to be closer to their pets, accomplished a real feat. Sixteen zoo employees were awarded the medal “For the Defense of Leningrad.” In memory of their feat, it was decided not to rename the zoo, but to leave its old name - Leningradsky.

To the right of the main entrance to the zoo there is a memorial plaque in memory of those terrible years. And on the territory of the zoo, in the “Brown Bearcutter” building, which survived the Great Patriotic War - the oldest building of the Leningrad Zoo today, there is a museum “Zoo during the Siege”. In this museum you can get acquainted with the life of wartime employees and learn in detail about the feat of our colleagues during the siege.

In the post-war years, the zoo was quickly restored. By 1951 his collection included more than 150 species of animals. Animals appeared in the Leningrad Zoo, which later became the founders of entire dynasties. So on August 9, 1956, a pair of giraffes arrived - Boy and Juliet, who gave our zoo 12 offspring (this is a world record). Their last daughter, Luga, still lives in our zoo with her daughter Sonya.

During these years, the good tradition of the Leningrad Zoo was laid to hold thematic educational events for visitors. Since 1948, Bird Days have been organized, with competitions to create the best birdhouse and educational quizzes. Since 1951, New Year holidays have been added to them. Today, themed events are held at the zoo on average twice a month, they are dedicated to different memorable dates and animals in the zoo's collection.

These days, free excursions, game rooms, quizzes, and animal feeding demonstrations are held for visitors.

Today, the Leningrad Zoo remains a unique museum of wildlife in St. Petersburg, an environmental and educational institution. It continues to develop tirelessly, trying to keep up with the times, improving the conditions for keeping animals, trying to bring them to the European level, and improving the quality of service for its visitors.

Unfortunately, archival documentation from pre-revolutionary and even pre-war times was not preserved in the Zoo, since in 1940, on someone’s instructions from above, the Zoo’s archive was burned. Now the Zoo has a historical archive, a good photo library, and a large collection of slides, but its foundation was laid relatively recently, about 40 years ago. However, the city archives still contain a lot of materials. A lot of interesting details can be gleaned from newspaper and magazine publications in the collections of the Library of the Academy of Sciences and the Public Library. And the Zoo library preserves a unique publication - “The History of the Leningrad Zoological Garden”.

The zoo invites everyone who has photographs, printed materials, or simply memories of the pre-war and war zoo to help restore its history.
