The Summer Garden in St. Petersburg was founded by Peter I in 1704. Thus, the Russian emperor made his dreams of his own Versailles park come true.
Address:
Summer Garden in St. Petersburg
The park got its name due to the fact that annual flowers, the so-called “annuals,” were the first to appear in it.
Despite the fact that the composition of the plants changed many times, the name was firmly established. Peter I arranged his summer residence on a grand scale: statues of characters from Aesop’s fables, fountains, sculptural compositions. In 1710-1714, under the leadership of the architect Dominico Trezzini, the Summer Palace was built on the territory of the garden, which has survived to this day. Summer Garden after reconstruction
In 2009, a comprehensive reconstruction project for the Summer Garden was launched, which was implemented over three years. Then the historical layout and the fence of the outer garden were recreated, while at the same time, taking into account the lost details and restoring the original coloring, the inner fence was restored. The total budget for restoration work is three billion rubles. The result of the restoration: 92 original statues were restored, the park regained its former splendor and simplicity. 90 new sculptures have been installed and eight new fountains are in operation. The legendary Porphyry Vase has been repaired, and the green area of the park has been restored. The goal of successful reconstruction is to bring the appearance of the Summer Garden as close as possible to its appearance from the time of Peter I.
