Field of Mars
Great Meadow, Amusing Field, Tsaritsyn Meadow - all these names once referred to the Field of Mars. Emperor Paul I was a great lover of military affairs and often organized military parades on the Field of Mars, immortalized in the poetry and paintings of Russian creators. Therefore, he ordered the construction of the Mikhailovsky Castle, his official residence, closer to this place. In 1917, after well-known events, those killed in the February and October revolutions were buried on the field. The very first Eternal Flame in the country was lit on the Field of Mars. This happened in 1957. The ensemble of the Field of Mars includes the Marble Palace, Pavlovsk Barracks, Mikhailovsky Castle, Summer and Mikhailovsky Gardens.
