Menshikov Palace in St. Petersburg

One of the most magnificent creations of the 18th century is the Menshikov Palace. Peter I, who valued an ascetic lifestyle and was generous by nature, gave the governor of St. Petersburg A.D. Menshikov. residence, which was located on Vasilyevsky Island.

Construction of the palace began.

To implement construction plans, Western European architects, architects, and artists were sent to Russia. All work was carried out by Russian craftsmen. Therefore, the building combined both Russian features and new European solutions. The decoration of the palace was also magnificent. Artistic stonework, marble-lined halls, antique and Italian style of sculptures represented the palace as an example of a new trend in architecture and palace construction. When the tsar's favorite was sent into exile in 1727, the palace burned.

In 1981, the palace was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Hermitage Museum and opened to visitors. The atmosphere in the magnificent halls of the palace is imbued with a special spirit of the past era.

The main entrance to the palace was the Great Entrance Hall, decorated with antique statues. To accommodate the honorary guard and await the reception, there was a special building adjacent to the Great Entrance Hall - Kardegardia. Large chambers, decorated with Italian tapestries, carpets and furniture made of precious wood, served for lavish receptions. An office room was allocated for secretaries and chief secretaries, where business papers were written. The hallway of Prince Menshikov amazes with its uniqueness and sophistication. The tiled decoration of the walls and ceiling, the picturesque interior and luxurious furniture have no analogues. The central lobby is decorated with antique figures. In the center of the composition is the sun god Apollo. In the halls of the palace you can see the rarest objects of applied art, samples of weapons, collections of paintings, and astronomical instruments. The museum's relics include a chess table with unique amber pieces, a mirror in an amber frame, a portrait of the emperor, and a lampshade with military scenes.

Every day from 10.30 to 18.00. On Sunday from 10.30 to 17.00. Closed on Monday. The ticket office closes an hour earlier.
