The history of the Mikhailovsky Palace begins in 1798.
This year, Prince Mikhail was born - the son of Emperor Paul I. Immediately after the baby was born, the father decided that in the future he would build a magnificent palace for his child. Especially for this purpose, he ordered large sums of money to be set aside annually. Alas, Paul I never saw the Mikhailovsky Palace. During the coup, the emperor was killed. Nevertheless, his will was carried out. When Mikhail turned 21, Emperor Alexander I ordered a mansion to be built for him. The architect of the new complex was Carl Rossi, who began work on the project back in 1817.
At first it was assumed that the Mikhailovsky Palace would be built on the site of some other building. But then this proposal was considered unprofitable, and it was decided to build the estate on a vacant lot in the city center. Interestingly, all the work was carried out in the summer, as well as in warm weather in spring and autumn, in order to ensure that the building was strong and reliable. In total, 7.6 million rubles were spent on the construction of the Mikhailovsky Palace. Most of this money was spent on decorating the interiors of the mansion. The interior decoration of Mikhail Pavlovich's house was striking in its splendor.
The entrance staircase was decorated with two sculptures of lions, which were cast especially for this estate. The statues are an exact copy of ancient sculptures found during excavations in Rome in the 16th century. Wallpaper was used in the house for the first time. The floor of the building was covered with parquet made of precious and very expensive wood.
