in front of the castle there was a square where Paul I ordered to erect a monument to his great-grandfather, crowning it with the following words: “For great-grandfather, great-grandson.” Mikhailovsky Castle was founded in the place where the Imperial Summer Palace was once located. From the outside, this building resembles a quadrangle, with each facade of the building decorated in its own way. The central part of the western and eastern facades has rounded projections. One of these architectural elements houses the Church of the Archangel Michael. The north side of the building is decorated with a row of marble columns and a wide staircase on which stand statues of Flora and Hercules. A high octagonal arch leads into the courtyard of the building. The facade of the architectural structure is topped with a decorative bas-relief.
