Alexander Nevsky Bridge

The Alexander Nevsky Bridge is the end point of the city's main thoroughfare - Nevsky Prospekt. We can say that old Petersburg ends here. The other bank of the Neva is the quarters of the Stalin era buildings, and even further away the residential areas of the city begin. If you don’t turn anywhere, the road will eventually lead to Vsevolozhsk. The length is 629 meters; together with overpasses and ramps, the bridge crossing is 906 meters; The width of the bridge is 35 meters.

The Alexander Nevsky Bridge is the longest bridge in the city.

The authors of the project are chief engineer A. S. Evdonin, engineers K. P. Klochkov, G. M. Stepanov, architects A. V. Zhuk, S. G. Mayofis, Yu. I. Sinitsa.

The name of the bridge was given on May 15, 1965 in honor of the great Russian commander and heavenly patron of St. Petersburg, Prince Alexander Nevsky. The construction of the bridge was carried out in 1960-1965.

The bridge is 7-span, symmetrical relative to the centrally located swing span. The fifty-meter swing span in the middle of the river is two-winged with a fixed axis of rotation.

The bridge spans on both sides of the drawbridge are covered with 3-span continuous, prestressed, reinforced concrete beams of variable height. The bridge design uses cables - high-quality steel cables with a diameter of 70 mm.

The individual parts of the bridge are coupled and tightened by the force of cables passed inside them and tensioned. The tension force of the cables is controlled by special devices taking into account the air temperature. In cold weather, the tension is weakened; on hot days, it is strengthened with special winches. To pass the cables inside the main reinforced concrete beams of the bridge, special through openings are provided; They also contain communication, lighting, alarm, etc. cables. The hydraulic drive of the adjustable part ensures the lifting of 25-meter wings in two minutes.
Granite-lined embankments and staircases were built near the bridge.

On November 1, 1965, the structure was tested for strength using battle tanks.
On November 5, 1965, the bridge was put into operation. During the construction period, the bridge was called Staro-Nevsky. Subsequently, steel ropes (12 km) and waterproofing were replaced (according to the design of engineer A. A. Zhurdin). The work was supervised by engineer V. G. Pavlov. The work was carried out from December 10, 2000 to April 2001
