State Hermitage Museum

The State Hermitage has a collection of about three million works of art and monuments of world culture. It includes paintings, graphics, sculpture and objects of applied art, archaeological finds and numismatic material.

Foundation of the museum

The foundation date of the Hermitage is considered to be 1764, when Catherine II acquired a collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant I.-E. Gotskovsky.

The museum celebrates its founding day every year on December 7 – St. Catherine’s Day.

Status of the Hermitage

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation of December 18, 1991, the State Hermitage was included in the list of especially valuable objects of the national heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. According to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of June 12, 1996, the State Hermitage is under the patronage of the President of the Russian Federation.

Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 984 of November 29, 2011 approved the new charter of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Culture "State Hermitage". In accordance with the charter, the founder of the State Hermitage is the Government of the Russian Federation.

In honor of the State Hermitage, according to the Official Certificate of the International Astronomical Union and the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences dated April 11, 1997, the minor planet registered in the International Catalog of Minor Planets under No. 4758 received the name Hermitage.
