This only memorial apartment for dramatic artists in St. Petersburg preserves a century and a half history of a unique artistic family (1803-1948) and is one of the branches of the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theater and Musical Art.
The owner of a three-story mansion in the most fashionable part of Nevsky Prospect at that time in 1869 became the famous artist of the Alexandrinsky Theater Vasily Vasilyevich Samoilov (1813-1887).
During Soviet times, the building was occupied by communal apartments. The secondary “movement” of the Samoilov actors into the house on Stremyannaya Street took place in 1994 in connection with the reconstruction of the hotel complex. Thanks to the rich funds of the Theater Museum, as well as the active participation of the descendants of the dynasty, the apartment was filled with authentic items from the actor’s life.
The owner of the house, Vasily Samoilov, was known as a connoisseur and connoisseur of art, a collector, and a man of broad professional and life interests. It is not surprising that his house contained the most valuable objects of art, examples of Russian and Western European painting. Fortunately, it was possible to recreate some of the furnishings of the house, as well as include exhibits, without which the story about the history of theatrical St. Petersburg in the 19th and early 20th centuries would have become incomplete. The creative traditions of the house are actively developing to this day: performances, musical evenings, and children's programs are held in the Music Living Room.
The Museum regularly opens exhibitions telling about other glorious theatrical dynasties of St. Petersburg. In three halls of the museum there is an exhibition dedicated to the stars of St. Petersburg ballet of the 20th century. But the focus of the museum, of course, is the history of the Samoilov dynasty of actors, which could well become the plot of a fascinating family saga: it contains many intriguing events, many of which have become family legends.
For example, an amazing story about how a boy from a patriarchal merchant family left home on foot for the northern capital to devote himself to art. Or about how the daring culprit of a loud public scandal was forced to leave his service and go on stage; how the strange marriage of a young actress became the end of her theatrical career... All these happy and dramatic episodes unfolded against the backdrop of the Golden and Silver Age of Russian history, world wars, revolutionary upheavals, and represent a cross-section of a century and a half of Russian history, which can be viewed with the help of a special artistic “ optics". The museum is open to visitors:
Thu-Sun from 12.00 to 19.00 (the ticket office closes an hour earlier);
