The Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts is a unique art collection not only in Russia, but also in the world. Having emerged in the mid-18th century simultaneously with the Academy of Arts, the museum turned into a truly unique collection. Only here, getting acquainted with the works of students and teachers, can one see where the future artist begins, what steps lead to the heights of mastery. The Academy of Arts collected drawings, engravings, paintings by Russian and Western European masters, as well as casts from works of ancient and Western European sculpture, which served as models for drawing in the “plaster heads” and “plaster figures” classes.

The building of the Academy of Arts itself, built according to the design of two teachers of the architectural class of the Academy of Arts - Kokorinov and Delamot in 1764 - 1772.
is an outstanding architectural monument of early classicism in Russia, belonging to the number of “particularly valuable objects of cultural heritage.” Russian painters and sculptors of the 18th-19th centuries, decorating the ceremonial interiors where the Museum of the Academy of Arts is currently located, embodied the idea of the importance of fine art in the life of an enlightened society and in the destinies of Russia, and sought to convey to the younger generations of masters of the “three most noble arts” the idea of a high purpose their callings. The Academy's house church, the Raphael and Titian halls were decorated in the 1830s according to the design of the author of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, Ton, rector of the Academy of Arts in the 1840s-1850s.
The permanent exhibitions of the Scientific Research Museum are located on three floors of the “compass” - the internal concentric building of the Academy building.
The galleries, “running around” the internal circular courtyard of the building (diameter - 55 meters) represent a unique exhibition space. The first floor is occupied by a department of casts, presenting masterpieces of ancient sculpture, as well as models of architectural monuments of antiquity, made in the 18th century from cork in the workshop of the Roman model maker and sculptor Kiki.
The collection is unparalleled in its completeness and artistic value: many of the casts collected here were molded directly from the originals back in the 18th-19th centuries. The permanent exhibition on the second floor, called the “Academic Museum,” presents paintings from the museum’s historical collection, works by those famous artists whose paintings served as models for study and copying by many generations of Russian youths.
This was precisely the principle of arranging the permanent exhibition of the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Arts until 1917: on the 2nd floor in the “circular” halls, where the Art Gallery was opened and sculpture was exhibited, in addition to the best “programs” of domestic painters (paintings on given subjects, for which the authors received gold medals, titles of artist, academician and professor) also showed works by foreign masters. The exhibition “Architecture of St. Petersburg in the 18th-19th centuries” is located on the third floor.
in models, drawings and drawings”, introduces the works of outstanding architects of the past. Of exceptional interest are the unique design models of famous architectural monuments of St. Petersburg - the Smolny Monastery, St. Isaac's Cathedral, St. Michael's Castle, the Exchange, etc.
