New Holland

“New Holland” and the Admiralty are two closely related concepts. In the 18th century, at the behest of Peter I, Dutch shipbuilders came to work on the left bank of the Neva.
Address: New Holland
The name Holland originated from its similarity to foreign ports.

Then, the name of the island “New Holland” was given between the Moika, Admiralty and Kryukov canals. The history of “New Holland” has developed in stages, from the 18th century to the current 21st century. Gradually, by the 30s of the 18th century, wooden barns and stone structures with erected vertical warehouses for storing logs had already appeared here. Even in the 18th century, the purpose of the island remained as a warehouse. In the middle of the century, a naval prison building appeared; it was called “The Bottle” because of its round shape. And ever since then, the catchphrase “Stay out of the bottle” has appeared. The island played a great role in the development of the Russian navy, as the first Experimental Pool, created by Dmitry Mendeleev, appeared here, as well as a laboratory for the development of smokeless gunpowder. In the 20th century, a fire damaged the warehouses, soon after which they were reconstructed and improved into metal structures.

Also here, in the 20th century, the first testing of Russian submarines, battleships and battleships was carried out in the experimental pool. At the beginning of the century, a radio station appeared on the island, which played an important historical role in 1917, when V.I. Lenin notified the fleet that a revolution had begun. The Great Patriotic War caused great damage to the Island through numerous artillery attacks. After restoration, according to the idea of the architect Veniamin Fabritsky, the island was open to visits by residents and guests of the city as a cultural historical center. And only at the beginning of the 21st century this project began to be implemented. New Holland today
Today the mystery of what the Island looks like from the inside has been revealed.

Although the Arch with Tuscan columns, which connects the lake with the Moika and retains a certain mystery, is still pleasing to the eye, since 2006 the appearance of the island began to change significantly. The authorities and investors took up its reconstruction. They set themselves such tasks as: restoration of architectural monuments and creation of a multifunctional complex as a particularly significant facility for residents of the northern capital. The plans, of course, include the opening of museums, theaters, exhibition halls, and scientific laboratories and research centers that improve IT technologies. They also plan to expand the island with commercial infrastructure, namely hotels, business centers and offices. According to reports from information sources, ancient buildings remained on the island: a blacksmith, three timber warehouses and a prison, which are protected by the state. Geek Picnic in New Holland
Island New Holland Island In August 2011, Yura Livshits started a Geek Picnic on the island, which brought together about one and a half thousand participants actively interested in and participating in IT developments. One of the exhibits was a 3D printer that prints three-dimensional plastic products. It is worth noting that the highlight of the printer itself is that it consists of parts that are themselves products of an identical printer. All guests and participants were able to see the newly developed Animating Touch Startup system for creating cartoons on touch screens. A “trick” for shopaholics was presented, allowing them to navigate the assortment of nearby stores.
