One of the famous and majestic monuments of St. Petersburg dedicated to political figures is rightfully considered the monument erected in honor of F.E. Dzerzhinsky made of bronze and colored granite.
Address:
Shpalernaya st., 62
Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky was born in 1877 during Tsarist Russia, and passed away under Soviet rule, having made his contribution to the development of history and the formation of a new power, leaving an indelible mark in the memory of many contemporaries and comrades.
He was a brave revolutionary, a prominent party and public figure. At one time, Dzerzhinsky was elected chairman of the Cheka and served as People's Commissar of Railways. A monument in his honor was erected on Shpalernaya Street, directly opposite the current FSB building.
The project was developed and brought to life by sculptors Vladimir Emilievich Gorev, Sergei Anatolyevich Kubasov and architect Vyacheslav Borisovich Bukhaev. The opening took place in 1981, on October 23. The base of the monument is made of gray granite, the pedestal is pink.
The sculpture itself is cast from bronze, and the letters on the pedestal are engraved with it. On the back side of the monument are the names and initials of its creators, on the front side - the name of the honored figure to whom the sculpture is dedicated. The decision to build the sculpture was made back in 1977 in honor of the centenary of the birth of Felix Dzerzhinsky by the Leningrad City Executive Committee.
On September 9 of the same year, the first foundation stone of the future architectural structure was laid. A life-size model of the sculpture was made in 1980 and immediately cast in bronze at the Leningrad plant. Then the Leningrad Plant for Facing and Building Materials carried out all the finishing and manufacturing work with granite. After which the monument was solemnly erected and unveiled in its designated place in the center of the Northern capital. The total height of the monument is 7 meters, of which 3 meters is the height of the pedestal, and 4 meters is the height of the sculpture. Today the monument is one of the most popular and recognizable landmarks of St. Petersburg.
