Monument to the famous Russian writer I.A. Krylov was installed in the Summer Garden not far from the Tea House in 1855 in St. Petersburg.
Address:
St. Petersburg, Summer Garden
Pensive Ivan Andreevich is depicted sitting on a fairly high pedestal, 3.5 m high, in simple clothes - trousers and a long frock coat, in his hands an open book and a pen.
The pedestal of the monument depicts animals from the writer’s famous fables: “The Monkey and the Glasses”, “Quartet”, “The Cuckoo and the Rooster”, “The Elephant in the Voivodeship”, etc. Krylov studied little and, unfortunately, did not receive an education, but thanks to his natural talent and he knew two foreign languages, had good knowledge of literature, mathematics, and music, and became an enlightened man of his time.
The work of the great fabulist is very loved by the people. In total, Krylov wrote about 200 fables. After Krylov’s death in 1845, the St. Petersburg Vedomosti publishing house came up with a proposal to create a monument.
Over the course of three years, about 30,000 rubles were collected, mainly from donations from admirers of the writer’s talent. In 1848, a competition was created in which all the famous sculptors of those times took part. Preference was given to the project of Baron von Klodt, who became famous as the author of the famous horses on the Anichkov Bridge. To depict characters from fables on the monument, live animals posed for Klodt.
Therefore, in the room where the master worked, there was a whole menagerie: a monkey, a sheep, a fox, a crane, a donkey, a wolf, and even a bear. The sculptor did not tolerate being near a goat, so a neighbor’s woman brought him, and to make sketches of predators, the master often visited the German Zam, who maintained a large menagerie, and went to Tsarskoe Selo to look at the elephant. Thanks to hard and long work, all animals look very expressive and lifelike. In total, the sculptor spent about five years working on it. When bringing the monument project to life, artist A. A. Agin became Klodt’s indispensable assistant. This monument became the last famous creation of P. K. Klodt. On May 12, 1855, the presentation of the monument to the people took place in a solemn atmosphere in the Summer Garden.
During the Patriotic War, to preserve the integrity of the monument, the monument was fenced with wooden shields, but it was still damaged and was restored in 1945.

Klodt has been decorating the Summer Garden for 160 years and attracting the attention of all admirers of the talent of the fabulist and sculptor.
