Today Alexandria Park is a protected monument of landscape gardening art in Peterhof.
Address:
Peterhof, Alexandria Park
On the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, on an area of 115 hectares, lies the Alexandria garden and park ensemble, created in the mid-19th century.
The history of the creation of the park goes back to the reign of the Romanov dynasty. The lands located near St. Petersburg were donated by Peter 1 to Prince A. Menshikov. However, neither he nor the Dolgoruky princes, into whose possessions these lands subsequently passed, had the chance to own them for a long time. A royal gift
The new owner was Nicholas 1, who presented the picturesque lands to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna.
At this time, the creation of a park ensemble began, named Alexandria in honor of the new owner. A residence in the “Gothic” style was erected on the terraces of the park, intended for a cozy country holiday for the royal family. An exceptionally beautiful lake was created on the lower terrace. Ostentatious luxury of decoration
The decoration and interior of the palace emphasized the Gothic motifs of the style.
The Gothic Chapel, the home church for the royal family, fit into the landscape of the Alexandria Garden in an original way. This magnificent building is unusual in its decoration: the statues of angels, apostles, the Mother of God and the evangelists are made of copper sheets. Mirror glass stained glass windows are installed above the portals. The main elements of artistic decor are made of cast iron. All work was carried out under the direction of P. Erler, whose grave is located near the Chapel. Designed in the same style, all the buildings in the park area created a unique palace and park ensemble. Unusual monuments
After the revolution, an unusual museum was opened in the park - a railway carriage in which Nicholas II signed his abdication of the Russian throne. In another carriage there was an exhibition about the collapse of tsarism and the imperialist war. The carriage of the first train that ran between Moscow and St. Petersburg also became a unique monument. In a clearing of the park, a pyramidal monument was erected with the inscription “To the working people - the builders of Peterhof.”
