Internationalist Park was founded at the end of the twentieth century in memory of the victims of the war in Afghanistan (1979-1988). A memorial was erected in the park, where the names of fallen soldiers and a memorial inscription were carved on ten granite stones, which reads: “Eternal memory to the sons of the fatherland who died in the line of military duty in the Republic of Afghanistan.”
Internationalists Park (formerly Komsomolsky Park) is bounded by Slavy Avenue - from the north, Southern Highway - from the south, Bukharestskaya Street - from the west and the residential development of the village at the former brick factory - from the east.
The park area is about 45 hectares. The park also includes a small area off Bukharestskaya Street, south of the Southern Highway, which is directly adjacent to the quarries. The park was founded in 1982. In the western part of the park there are a number of Kupchin’s attractions: the Church of St. George the Victorious, a monument to internationalist soldiers, a monument to soldiers of special units of Russia.
In the eastern part of the park, in the alignment of Prazhskaya Street, in the early 2000s it was planned to build a water park, but this project was never implemented.
In the southern part of the park there is a small sports ground with a tennis court. In a historical sense, it is more correct to attribute the location of the current park not to Kupchin, but to the village of Ryleev (formerly Romanov), which was significantly smaller in population than Kupchin, but at the same time occupied a much larger territory.
The construction site for the future park first appeared on the city map in 1962–1964. Then, on the territory limited by Glory Avenue, Bukharestskaya Street, Sofia Street and Dimitrova Street, it was planned to create a green zone with a set of various sports facilities. In the General Development Scheme of Leningrad 1978–1979. it was called "Park in block 20.31 south of the Volkovka River." Initially, 190 hectares were allocated for development. The park was founded on the day of the Lenin communist subbotnik on April 17, 1982. The park project was carried out by architects under the leadership of A. G. Lelyakov.
At first it was called Komsomol Park, since the patronage of the young facility was taken by the Komsomol Republic Committee of the Frunzensky district, and the efforts of Komsomol members and pioneers carried out landscaping work here. The first stage of the park was handed over to the gardening and park management in 1984, the second - in 1985, and the third - in 1986. In 1988, the park received its current name - Internationalists Park. The natural reservoirs of the park are the oxbows (remains of the riverbed) of the Volkovka River, on the banks of which the village of Kupchino was located upstream.
Since the 1950s, the area between Volkovka and the Southern Highway was occupied by garden plots. Some fruit trees have survived to this day. After filling up most of the river on the territory of Kupchin, the park’s reservoirs ceased to be flowing and were expanded and divided. Nowadays there are two ponds that are not connected to each other - the eastern (large) and the western (small). The passage between them is in the western part of the park. In April 2009, the foundation stone of the Family Tree Alley took place.
The event was attended by representatives of the district administration, deputies of the Legislative Assembly and municipal councils, activists of public organizations and members of the district executive committee of United Russia. In the late 1980s, a boat station was built near the shore of the pond.
There was a rental point for pedal boats for vacationers. All these attractions have long been forgotten. Back in 2006, along the northern shore of the pond one could see a fence that once enclosed the territory of the boat station. The dilapidated buildings of the station, presenting a sad sight, existed until 2010. By the spring of 2011, all buildings were demolished. Until the end of the 1970s, there were garden plots between the Southern Highway and the right (southern) bank of the Volkovka.
To this day, in some places there are still a few fruit trees preserved from those times. You can no longer expect abundant fruiting from them, but they still delight vacationers with their flowering in the spring. A small part of the territory between the Southern Highway and the quarries is a continuation of the Internationalists Park.
A children's playground in the form of a fortress was built here. Unfortunately, for many years it presented a sad spectacle. In 2008, the ruins were demolished. There is also a sports ground with a tennis court. The area is directly adjacent to the quarries. Most of the park is located on the territory of block 20b of the VVZhD (East of the Vitebsk Railway).
