Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was erected in 1801 in memory of the imperial couple who founded the city of Pavlovsk.
Address: Pavlovsk, Artilleristskaya street, 2
They were Paul I and Maria Feodorovna.

The author of the idea to build the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is considered to be the priest John Zhemchuzhin, who not only initiated the fundraising, but also chose a sketch of the temple and received permission for construction from the owner of the city, Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich. One cannot help but belittle the contribution to this matter of the famous spiritual figure John of Kronstadt, who blessed the collection of donations for the temple, left 50 rubles, and many wealthy townspeople followed his example. It took two whole years to approve the project, since the Grand Duke wanted to see a building worthy of its high purpose and meeting his delicate taste.

He rejected one option after another. As a result, the prototype for the cathedral was the “Joy of All Who Sorrow” church, which was the only one to the liking of the august person. This pseudo-Russian style building was decorated with stone and red tiles, which were picturesquely combined with gilded mosaics and colored tiles. This unusual temple was created by Academician A.I. von Gauguin, who eventually became the author of the project for the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. By the way, he did not take even a penny from donations for his work. Construction began in 1899 under the direction of a specially elected commission and ended in 1904.

The temple is a typical example of early 20th century architecture in the pseudo-Russian style. Its walls were built of red-brown bricks covered with decorative plaster. The total capacity of the church space was 1000 people. In plan, St. Nicholas Cathedral appears as a square with a small apse in the altar part.

There is a small bell tower in the west; it is known that the main bell weighed 169 pounds. The temple is five-domed, with hipped towers at its corners. On three sides, the facades of the building were decorated with images of the three patrons of the artillery batteries that were located in Pavlovsk. The carved wooden iconostasis of the temple, made by master Subbotin, also followed the general Russian style. The images for him were created by the painter Porfirov. The royal gates, walls and vaults of the cathedral were lavishly covered with paintings. The temple was consecrated in 1902 in the presence of members of the royal family. In 1926, the temple was closed and destroyed. But greater destruction was caused in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker by the Nazis, who temporarily occupied Pavlovsk. Before the collapse of the USSR, this room housed a warehouse and a tank workshop. In 1991, the dilapidated building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. With the help of parishioners, the temple was restored and restored to its grandeur. There is a sewing workshop attached to the church, which creates vestments and church household items.
