In the first decades after the founding of St. Petersburg, the barracks of the Preobrazhensky Regiment were located in its place.

Tsesarevna Elizabeth often came here, as she often baptized the children of soldiers and officers. The future ruler brought them gifts and sweets. One autumn night in 1741, the crown princess, dressed in a military uniform, unexpectedly arrived here to ask the grenadiers for help in gaining the throne, which was illegally occupied by Anna Leopoldovna. After her coronation, the grateful ruler of Russia decided to erect a stone five-domed Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in the former regimental courtyard. It was designed by experienced craftsmen D.A. Trezzini and M.G. Zemtsov. The foundation was laid in 1743, and two years later it was consecrated. Unfortunately, in 1825 there was a fire in the building, but all the shrines were saved from the fire.

Two years later its restoration began, and after another two it was consecrated. It became one of the main churches of St. Petersburg along with St. Isaac's and Kazan Cathedrals. Restoring the temple, architect V.P.

Stasov sought to preserve its appearance in its original form. But he also made small changes to it. From the west, the facade became decorated with a small portico and pediment, the domes became hemispherical, and the cathedral began to be surrounded by a picturesque square, the fence of which was cast from cannons captured from Turkish troops. Until the February Revolution, the temple contained standards, banners, military trophies, uniforms, a memorial plaque with the names of the fallen officers of the regiment, as well as a remarkable saber.

Transfiguration CathedralIn the central part there was an iconostasis made according to the sketches of V.P.

Stasova. It was carved, four-tiered, decorated with gilded carvings. The famous painters A. Ivanov, V. Shebuev and A. Ugryumov painted images for him. The temple vaults were painted sky blue, the center of the dome was occupied by a golden star, and saints and angels were depicted around it.

The priceless shrines of this place were two icons. These are “Joy of All Who Sorrow,” dating from the beginning of the 18th century, and the Savior Not Made by Hands, the author of which was Simon Ushakov. During the Soviet era, the temple fell into the hands of renovationists; services were regularly held there even during the siege. During this tragic time, a bomb shelter was built in its basements, where they provided assistance to the wounded residents of the city. The building was damaged during shelling, but in the post-war period it was completely repaired.
