The cathedral was erected in honor of the famous Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, which is one of the most revered and famous icons in Rus'. Just like many other churches in St. Petersburg, the cathedral was created on the site where its predecessor was previously located - the wooden Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, founded back in 1761. Nobody still knows the name of the architect. However, a small number of researchers believe that he is P. A. Trezzini.

Over time, the wooden church could not accommodate a large number of parishioners.
Therefore, people decide to write an appeal to Elizaveta Petrovna with a request that construction of a new cathedral can begin. Drawings and other basic documents for the new temple were created already in 1759, but, nevertheless, the foundation was laid only in August 1761.
Construction progressed slowly. I. Kirikov, who was the construction manager, was killed in his own temple and was later buried on the territory of the church. For the centennial anniversary of the cathedral, a monument was erected on Kirikov’s grave. View of the Cathedral of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.
The main decoration of the upper cathedral is considered to be the unique iconostasis of the main altar in the name of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, which has interestingly been preserved to this day. In addition to this icon, the cathedral contains such icons as the image of St. Seraphim of Sarov with part of his relics, as well as the “Savior Not Made by Hands.” In 1930, the temple closed, and book collections began to occupy its space.
August 1989 was marked for the Council by a return to its previous activities, because it was given to the Leningrad Diocese.
Today
Now the temple opens its doors to all parishioners, services are constantly organized there. In addition, there is a school of bell ringers, as well as a children's choir, which is popular all over the world.
