The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ on Blood is one of the most famous architectural monuments not only in Russia, but also in Europe. This unique building is a striking example of the neo-Russian style.
Address:
Griboyedov Canal Embankment, 2b
It was erected on the edge of the picturesque embankment of the Griboyedov Canal, where Alexander II, nicknamed the Liberator, was mortally wounded.
Therefore, the cathedral is also called the Savior on Spilled Blood. The author of the project was the architect A. A. Parland together with Archimandrite Ignatius. The model for them was the forms, composition and design of St. Basil's Cathedral, which is noticeable even to a non-specialist. The foundation of the temple was laid in 1883.
In total, the construction of the temple took more than twenty years; it was opened only in 1907. In the space of the temple there was a place, part of the pavement, where the bloody emperor lay. Therefore, the temple was moved to the very edge of the embankment, and its foundation was completely filled with concrete. The bell tower of the cathedral was made to protrude over the canal; it was also planned to build a bridge next to it, but this intention was not fulfilled. The composition of the Temple of the Resurrection is very complex; it represents a cubic massif, which is crowned by an octagonal tent with four small onion-shaped domes adjacent to it.
Next to the main quadrangle there is a bell tower with a golden dome. The highest point of the temple is 81 meters from the ground. Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ on the Blood.
The building is lavishly decorated with glazed brick, granite and marble inserts, figured platbands, tiles, decorative tiles and various belts. The roof strikes the eye with multi-colored tiles. And the domes of the temple shine unbearably, thanks to gilded copper sheets. On the pediments there are mosaic images on themes from the New Testament, which were made according to sketches by the famous Russian artist V.M. Vasnetsova. The interior of the Savior on Spilled Blood is not inferior in solemnity and festivity to the external cladding.
The inside of the temple is decorated with multi-colored marble, as well as inserts of semi-precious stones. Four columns made of Altai jasper surround the site of the tragedy, and on top of it is crowned a canopy decorated with topazes, rock crystal and gems. Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ on the Blood The pylons that support the vaults of the cathedral are decorated with Kyiv labrador at the bottom.
The vaults and walls are decorated with stunning mosaic panels that depict saints, archangels, as well as the coats of arms of the provinces of the Russian state. These are real masterpieces that amaze with their craftsmanship and taste. In the 30s of the twentieth century, the temple was almost destroyed, like a low-value cast from St. Basil's Cathedral. But, fortunately, he avoided this fate, since the Great Patriotic War began. When Leningrad was surrounded by siege, the corpses of the dead were brought there. In the post-war years it was used as a warehouse, and in 1971 it was transferred to the status of a memorial temple. It took more than twenty years to restore and was only opened to visitors in 1997. Now the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ operates as a museum, however, liturgies are sometimes held there.
