Holy Trinity Cathedral is an architectural monument of the 19th century, belonging to the style of late classicism. One of the most impressive buildings in the northern capital. It received its name thanks to the Izmailovsky regiment, for which this temple was a garrison.
Address:
Izmailovsky Prospekt, 7 a.
In 1756, in the place where the barracks of the Izmailovsky regiment were located, a small wooden church was built, which existed for more than 50 years until it was destroyed by a flood.
The temple was dismantled and a new one was built. This event took place in 1824 on the day of the Holy Trinity. The author of the project for the new cathedral was the famous architect V.P. Stasov, and the construction was personally financed by Emperor Nicholas I, because formally he was the head of the Izmailovsky regiment. This is a traditional five-domed cathedral with white walls and blue hemispherical domes decorated with bronze stars.
Moreover, the small domes of the cathedral are located above the columns of the porticoes. It is known that blue is the traditional color of the Izmailovsky Regiment, so the choice was not accidental. On the facades of the temple on four sides there are porticoes with six Corinthian columns. In the west, in the niches there are sculptures of angels, which are cast in bronze. Not far from the Holy Trinity Cathedral there is a chapel. Holy Trinity Izmailovsky Cathedral.
In 1886, the Column of Glory, erected according to the sketches of the architect D. Grim, was erected on the site of the cathedral. This is a majestic military monument consisting of five tiers of Turkish cannons captured in battle. It is crowned with an allegorical figure of Glory. It was dismantled in the 30s of the last century, but already in our century it was restored. The inside of the temple is decorated with columns and pilasters, which are covered with inserts of artificial marble.
The vaults of the cathedral are magnificently painted with images of the apostles and archangels. The semicircular iconostasis is decorated with Corinthian columns and a carved canopy. The temple also houses a revered image of the Holy Trinity, dating back to the 15th century. Holy Trinity Izmailovsky Cathedral.
Since the Trinity Cathedral was a garrison church, in the 19th century trophies and standards captured during the Russian-Turkish War were placed on its walls. Memorial plaques made of marble were also installed, on which the names of Russian soldiers who heroically died in battles were imprinted. After the revolutionary events, valuable utensils were removed from the cathedral and it was closed.
According to the plans, this building was supposed to become a crematorium, but in the end the premises began to be used as a warehouse. Due to shelling during the siege, the Holy Trinity Cathedral was significantly damaged and abandoned. In 1969, a monument was erected opposite it in honor of V.P. Stasova. With the collapse of the USSR, the building was again handed over to believers. It is being restored and services begin to take place there. Unfortunately, in 2005, a severe fire broke out in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, so it was again closed for worship. But by 2012 it was restored, and now it is operational.
