BUFF THEATER
The artistic director and founder of the modern theater "Buff" is People's Artist of Russia, professor of the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theater Arts, laureate of the Government of St. Petersburg Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of St. Petersburg culture Isaac Romanovich Shtokbant.
“In 1983, I graduated from a course in pop artists at the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography,” says Isaac Shtokbant.
- These were talented guys. Having received the “crusts”, they did not run away, but organized their own theater. In accordance with the genre, we wanted to simply call it a cabaret theater. The authorities looked at me as if I was crazy: what other cabaret is there in the Soviet state?! And then I remembered “Buffa”. They agreed to Buff. There was something in this word from Mayakovsky, from his “Mystery-bouffe”. But now I’m glad that then we were not allowed to call ourselves a cabaret theater. What we are doing now does not fit into the narrow framework of cabaret art.” Now the theater troupe consists of graduates of the Theater Academy of different years, among them: Honored Artists of Russia E. Alexandrov, M. Sultaniyazov, M. Tryasorukov, A. Solovyov, N. Bobrovnicaya, S. Magilenich, M. Smirnov, E. Zubovich, V. Smilyanets, N. Kozorovitskaya, O. Pikalo;
laureates of Russian pop artist competitions S. Wilhelm, V. Suta, A. Kulaeva, M. Bondaruk, I. Syabitov, A. Stekolnikov and others. Many artists who went through the Buffa school are successfully working on the big stage today: Gennady Vetrov, Yuri Galtsev, Elena Vorobey, Mikhail Smirnov, Elena Spiridonova, famous radio hosts Vadim Karev, Viktor Yanishevsky. “Buff” is a unique theater in its essence. Where else in our country will you find a theater where one evening they play classics on the main stage, entertain the viewer with musical programs in the Mirror Living Room, and in the morning at the Buffikov Theater they give operas and fairy-tale performances for the little ones?
