Meet: Tosnensky waterfall
About 11 thousand years ago, when the Ioldian Sea retreated from its shore - the Baltic-Ladoga cliff, the Tosnensky waterfall (Gertovsky threshold) was formed.
The waters of the river, falling from a steep cliff, began to destroy it and the waterfall began its journey upstream. During its existence, it covered 7.5 km. Tosnensky Falls looks like a huge horseshoe and from a distance looks like a miniature copy of Niagara Falls.
The waterfall is considered the widest in Europe; its width in high water reaches 30 meters. The height of the waterfall is small, usually up to 2 meters, its height varies in different years and seasons. Under the waterfall there is a small pit with dark water.
In summer, the water in this pit warms up very quickly, and you can take hydromassage baths. And on weekends, not only local residents, but also guests from the city come to these shores. The banks of the Tosny River are so ancient and the river has been flowing here and eating off the banks for so long that geology lovers come here for souvenirs that only they understand.
Trolobites are the most delicious prey for people with a hammer.
These ancient arthropods can literally be picked out of a stone and brought home! They are scattered here along the banks of the river and the main thing is to know where to look for them and what to do after. It’s amazing, but if you walk along the river and look closely at the stones, you can see interspersed with the shells of ancient people who lived millions of years before you. There are many who like to chip off pebbles with the remains of ancient animals. The Gertovsky threshold is part of an ensemble of natural and historical objects called “Sablinsky natural monument”.
The ensemble includes the Sablinsky waterfall (on the Sablinka River), the canyons of the Sablinka and Tosna rivers, several caves (“Sablinsky Caves”), ancient burial mounds, the Pustynka farmstead, a memorial sign Cross and a stele (the site of Alexander Nevsky before the famous battle with the Swedes) . Place: Tosnensky district, Leningrad region, village. Ulyanovka.
