The Red Bridge over the Moika is located on Gorokhovaya Street. From here along Gorokhovaya towards the center there is direct access to the Admiralty and the Alexander Garden. In the opposite direction, through the Stone Bridge on the Griboyedov Canal you can get to Sadovaya Street near Sennaya Square. The length of the bridge is 42 meters, the width is 16.8 meters.
The bridge got its name from the color of its paint, which has existed since 1778 (before that it was called White, also based on the color of its paint).
Since 1717, there has been a wooden drawbridge here.
In 1737 it was rebuilt. A narrow gap (about 70 cm) was installed in the span, which was closed with removable shields to allow mast ships to pass through. The author of the design is Herman van Boles. At the end of the 18th century. The bridge was rebuilt into a 3-span bridge. In 1808-1814, the bridge was replaced by a single-span, cast-iron, arched one designed by engineer V. I. Geste.
Its span structure consisted of cast iron boxes of the Green, Pevchesky type, etc. The metal structures of the bridge were manufactured at the Ural factories of N. N. Demidov. In 1953-1954, the cast-iron bridge structures were replaced with steel arched ones according to the design of engineer V.V. Blazhevich.
The span structure consists of seven double-hinged welded arches connected to each other by a system of transverse beams and longitudinal braces. The appearance of the bridge has been preserved. Granite obelisks with bronze gilded balls and tetrahedral lanterns on metal brackets were restored.
The ancient railings separating the sidewalks from the roadway have been preserved. The facades, maintaining tradition, were painted red. The railings are made from a cast iron grating, similar to the grating on the Moika River embankment.
