Sampsonievsky Bridge

The length of the bridge is 212 meters. 150 years ago the bridge was 30 meters longer. No, the Neva has not become shallow - this is a consequence of the appearance of granite embankments into which its bed was chained. But the width of the bridge has become twice as large. From the previous 13, Sampsonievsky “plumped up” to today’s 27.
Address: Sampsonievsky Bridge
Named after Sampsonievsky Cathedral, located on the Vyborg side.

In 1784, a floating bridge was built here, which was called the Vyborg Bridge.

In 1847, a wooden 13-span bridge 242 meters long and 13 meters wide was built on this site. This bridge became known as Sampsonievsky.

In 1862 it was completely renovated. In 1871, the bridge was completely rebuilt using old piles and maintaining the original structure.

In 1889 it was replaced by a new wooden 17-span bridge of the same length, with a draw span in the middle of the bridge. The railings on its span were made of wood, but the bollards on the supports were cast iron, rectangular in cross-section, with lanterns.

In 1908, a new metal bridge was built, located 60 meters downstream (according to the design of Professor of the Engineering Academy GODU Krivoshein).

In 1923 it was named the Freedom Bridge.

In 1937, the bridge was rebuilt with a new metal drawbridge installed. In 1955-1958, a 5-span welded metal bridge with a double-wing draw span was built, with the addition of one arched span at the entrances (the authors of the project were engineers V.V. Demchenko, B.B. Levin and architects L.A. Noskov, V. A. Grushke).

The bridge was built under the leadership of engineer P.V. Andreevsky.

The shore supports of the bridge with slopes to the water and the reinforced concrete arched spans are lined with pink granite. Railings are artistic cast iron gratings. Tall candelabra in the form of cast iron profiled stands are topped with round frames with lamps in a circle. On October 4, 1991, the bridge was returned to its historical name. In the summer of 2000, the bridge was closed for reconstruction, and in November it was inaugurated for traffic. At the same time, the road surface was repaired, waterproofing was replaced, all the lamps were replaced, the railings were restored, the routing mechanisms were repaired, and bridge lighting was installed.
